Why You Need a Success Mindset

You hear it all the time: “success is a state of mind.” There are people who would argue that success is a natural result of proper planning, preparation and focused action, and that viewpoint certainly holds a grain of truth – but there are also many exceptions to disprove that “rule.” Have you ever wondered how two people can attempt the same objective in the same way and only one of them succeed? Is it sheer luck? Timing? Tenacity? More often than not, it’s a person’s mind-set that determines whether they fail or succeed.

What is a mind-set, anyway? Typically a mind-set refers to your predominant state of mind day to day. It’s what you think about, focus on, and expect from your daily experiences. Think negatively, expect the worst, feel pessimistic about your options and that’s exactly what you’ll seem to draw into your life. Likewise, think positively, expect the best and focus on a successful outcome and you get it most of the time.Mindset, Success

Makes sense, right? But how exactly does this work? Why is a success mind-set so important? There are three big reasons:

1) A success mind-set boosts your confidence and self-belief.

A lack of belief in yourself usually comes along with a sense of powerlessness and futility, which is the exact opposite of a success mind-set. Lack of confidence means you see no point in trying to be successful because it won’t happen anyway. Obviously, this type of mind-set is a recipe for failure in any endeavor.

Having a true success mind-set, on the other hand, means you believe in yourself and your capabilities. You believe you can succeed at nearly anything you try, and you’re willing to give it your best shot. Even better, the more you do try, the more confidence and self-belief you build – until you’re virtually unstoppable!

2) A success mind-set strengthens your determination.

Without a success mind-set, one failure is enough to convince you that pursuing your goals is a waste of time. Tenacity and determination don’t exist in your world. If you don’t become a raging success the first time you try, you surmise that it simply wasn’t meant to be. Unfortunately, few things worth having are obtained so easily!

A success mind-set, however, strengthens your awareness that a failure is not the end of the story – it’s just one more way that didn’t work out the way you planned. In fact, a true success mind-set makes it obvious that the only true failure occurs when you stop trying.

3) A success mind-set encourages fruitful actions.

Have you ever found yourself wandering in circles because you didn’t know the best way to approach a specific goal? Perhaps you had an idea of the best course of action but you felt intimidated by some of the action steps required. As a result, you may have kept sabotaging your efforts as you searched in vain for an easier or less frightening way to your goal.

With a true success mind-set, you’ll always know the most effective action steps that will lead directly to your goal. As already discussed, you’ll also have the inner confidence and determination to pursue them – which is a sure recipe for . . . you guessed it; success!

If I had to sum up how to develop a success mind-set into as few words as possible, I’d say this:

– Go for your dreams.
– Think positively.
– Believe in yourself.
– Believe you can do better.
– Learn, grow and develop yourself.
– Be willing to take chances.
– Give it your all.
– Expect the best in every situation.
– Be willing to fail.
– When you fall down, get back up and try again.

Keep doing that and you can’t help but become successful, from the inside out.

Susan Daley was a successful entrepreneur selling promotional products. She enjoyed making decent money while having the flexibility to work at home. Susan recently took over a colleague’s account, a huge growth opportunity. So why did she spend her mornings playing solitaire in her messy office rather than making phone calls to prospects?

To procrastinate is “to put off doing something”, or “to postpone or delay needlessly”. Sometimes we avoid doing the tasks that must be done because they are unpleasant or boring, or because we have poor time management skills or are lazy. And yet, often it is the tasks we most want to do that we put off, resulting in much internal pressure.

In Susan’s case, she loved building relationships with potential clients, helping them to better serve their customers and employees, and making a good paycheck to support her family.

So what was going on?

Awareness is the first step. Think about your excuses for not accomplishing your goals. Everyone has his or her own pattern of procrastinating. Here are eight examples:

– Fear of change, rejection or failure
– Need to be perfect (I can’t do it perfectly so I won’t start)
– Lack of time
– Too much stress, pressure or anxiety which leads to paralysis
– Overwhelm on how to start (task is too big, don’t know how to do it, etc.)
– Self-doubt or lack of confidence
– Disorganization, indecision
– Other priorities, big (work/family crisis) and little (need to check email first!)

Do these excuses sound reasonable and logical? That’s often the case. The problem is that if you buy into the excuses, you don’t follow-through on the steps needed to achieve your goals. Procrastination can feel good in the moment, but then creates stress. This becomes a vicious cycle.

Overcoming Procrastination

Getting into action alleviates the stress of procrastination almost instantaneously.

Here are the five simple steps:

1. Identify the task to be done
2. Identify the first or next step to accomplish the task
3. Commit to a time when you will begin the first step
4. Be aware of your pattern of excuses
5. BUT begin the first step in collaboration with the excuses

Susan outlined the steps needed to organize her files and her office to have ready access to client information. She set daily and weekly goals for contacting prospects and clients. Working with a coach provided the structure and accountability to stay in action on these tasks. She developed strategies to counteract the fear of rejection that was fueling some of the procrastination.

Don’t worry about eliminating all the excuses, or analyzing too much why you are procrastinating. Getting into action actually reduces the grip of the inertia and overwhelm of procrastination. As Susan found, it can be helpful to have partners and strategies to keep the excuses at bay.

You’ll feel more confident and relaxed as you experience the success of reaching your goals. You gain momentum and if you begin the task again and again, you WILL ultimately achieve it.

If you can’t afford to put money in on a hobby maybe you should try to pick one that does cost a lot like knitting or something to do with crafts there are a ton of things you can do that don’t cast nothing. Hot wheel cars only cost around a dollar. Perhaps you can spend time in shops looking at hot wheels, purchase one and go back each week to purchase another. Hot Wheel cars in time will become collectors items. In fact, the cars are already collector items, i.e. some are.
How do I get started with my hobby?
You have to decide what you enjoy, things that interest you like maybe collecting coins, or stamps or maybe you want to learn the history on them so this can be a good hobby for someone. Maybe someone likes to work with yarn and make things so that may be some one-hobby knitting or crouching. Maybe some one likes to work on cars and that is a hobby of theirs. There is no real way to get started other then doing it and deciding what you want to do as a hobby. So remember when you want to get your mind free of stress or do not want to get into trouble. Sit down and try to figure out what you what to do for a hobby. Perhaps you will want to write them down and pick out the one you think you would like. There is nothing wrong with having more then one hobby or later on deciding that you don’t want to do this after all and find another one. Just remember hobbies can help you improve your life by helping you to stay out of trouble and keep your mind clear of things so you can think more clearly. Other hobbies included doll collecting. The older porcelain dolls are a common collectors item you may want to consider. You will find a wide variety of dolls online at Ebay stores and so on. Motivation and Momentum

What Do You See?

One of the most difficult parts of goal achievement is simply getting started. It’s easy enough to dream and plan, but many people get stuck in this phase indefinitely and avoid taking action. Planning and dreaming might make you feel like you’re doing something about your goals, but if you never actually take a step forward you’ll never achieve them. In order to see measurable progress and start your momentum, you have to step out of your comfort zones and take action.

When you finally do gather your courage and begin moving forward, what usually happens? You realize it’s WAY harder than you thought it would be, right? It feels like you’re trying to run uphill. You keep tripping over obstacles, facing setbacks and delays, dealing with fear and anxiety, and fighting a daily battle to stay motivated.

It’s during this difficult phase that most people give up. They decide that “it isn’t meant to be” right now, so they set their dream aside and vow to try again later. Or worse, they resign themselves to a mediocre life because they don’t believe they have what it takes to succeed. They’ve “failed,” so they’re not going to try any more.

You Are Not Alone

Have you done this? Most people have!

However, this doesn’t have to be the end of the story. You can pick up your dreams, dust them off and try again. But this time you should know about a little something called Momentum.

You see, the difficult phase I just described is what happens at the beginning when you’re trying to gain momentum. Most people quit during this phase because they think it’s ALWAYS going to be this hard. What they don’t realize is that every effort they put toward the achievement of their goals will build on the previous efforts. With every step forward the process gets easier and easier. Finally, they’ve put so much energy and effort into the process that momentum begins to take over. Suddenly they realize that they don’t have to push so hard to keep moving forward. It becomes fun . . . even easy to achieve their goal.

This same experience can be yours! All you have to do is keep moving forward. Keep working toward your dreams and never quit. Momentum WILL take over eventually!

What Can You Do?

If you want to get momentum working even more quickly for you there are a few ways to do it, but they can be summed up in one sentence:

Be willing to work harder, faster and take bigger risks than you have in the past.

The reason why momentum can be delayed sometimes is because many people take very tentative steps toward their goals. They’re afraid to really give it their all, so they hold back much of the energy and power they could be devoting toward their goal. Even if they’re not aware of it, they may feel more comfortable working at a slower pace, so they avoid taking big risks and instead take baby steps.

There’s not a thing wrong with this approach if it suits you! However, if you want to make faster progress and build momentum quickly, think about taking bigger steps and giving your full energy and focus toward making it happen. By doing so, you’ll push through the difficult beginning and find yourself coasting before you know it.

Have you ever held back on doing something because you were afraid of failure?  Most people have!  Let’s face it; no one likes to fail.  None of us likes to feel like we’re ineffective, weak or lacking in any way, and that’s exactly how failure makes us feel.

However, you may be surprised to know that failure doesn’t exist – until YOU say it does.  In the dictionary, failure has several definitions:  1)  a failing to do or perform  2)  a state of inability to perform a normal function adequately  3)  a fracturing or giving way under stress  4)  a lack of success.

Look carefully at those definitions and you’ll probably realize they have one thing in common when it comes to goal achievement:  failure is a PERCEPTION.

If you believe you have failed, then you have. Also if you believe you don’t have the ability to succeed, then you don’t.  And if you believe you can’t handle the pressure of achieving your goals, you can’t.  Finally if you believe you’re not successful, you aren’t.  Failure only exists in your own mind!  The moment you decide to give up or stop working toward your goals, failure is born.

But what if you never do that?  What if you continue working toward your goals, one step at a time for as long as it takes?  There’s no failure then, is there?

This insight should be very encouraging if you’ve been working toward goals and not yet seeing positive results.  Simply keep going and you cannot fail!

Here are three tips to help you stay strong and focused on your goals:

1) Never give yourself an out.  Most people do this without even realizing it.  They are willing to work hard on achieving their goals, until the going gets too rough or their motivation dwindles.  Don’t do that!  Commit to making your goals happen, no matter what!  Never quit, never contemplate admitting failure, and never lose your inner determination.

2) Don’t get hooked on a specific time frame for completion.  It’s okay to set a general timeline. Just be aware that some circumstances will be beyond your control. So you can’t say for sure when your goal will be achieved.  If you do that, you’re just setting yourself up for failure!  Instead, get a general idea of when you’d like your goal to be completed. Then take it a day at a time and focus on making progress, not reaching the finish line in as little time as possible.

3) Finally, be sure that you don’t view obstacles and setbacks as failures.  The two are completely different.  An obstacle, setback or delay means only one thing:  it’s not time for your goal to be completed yet.  That’s it!  It doesn’t mean you failed; doesn’t mean you’re weak; and doesn’t mean you’ll never achieve your goals.  It means you’re not done with your project yet.  You’ve got to keep moving forward and find a way around or through the obstacle.

Should I Change Jobs?

Are you currently unhappy with your job or with your employer in general?  If you are, you may have considered changing jobs. With that in mind, if you depend on your paycheck to help pay your bills or to help support your family, you may be unsure as to whether or not a job change is really in the best interest of you and your family.  If this is something that you have asked yourself before, you will want to continue reading on.

When it comes to determining whether or not you should change jobs, there are a number of important factors that you will want to take into consideration. These factors are important, as no two situations are the same.  Different individuals rely on their paychecks for different things.  That is why it is advised that you examine the factors outlined below and then use them in your own, personal, situations.

One of the many factors that you will want to take into consideration, before deciding if you should change jobs, is your current job’s pay. Do you think that you receive a fair salary?  If you do, do you know that it may be difficult for you to make the same amount of money elsewhere?  Unless you are lucky enough to receive a job in upper level management, you may find yourself right back at the bottom of the ladder, having to work your way right back up.  For that reason, you will want to first take your current salary and compare it the salary that is being advertised with job openings that you can find in your local newspapers or online.

Health insurance is another factor that you will want to take into consideration, when deciding if you should change your job.  Do you currently rely on your job for health insurance, either for yourself or for your whole family?  If you do, this is definitely a factor that needs to be taken into consideration. Yes, you may be able to purchase health insurance for yourself or at least an extension of your coverage, but you should know that this can get quite expensive.  With that in mind, should you still decide to switch jobs, you may want to schedule all of your doctor’s appointments before you do so, just to get everything in order.  If your current coverage includes dental and vision coverage, you may also want to make these appointments too, just in case.

The current job outlook is another factor that you will want to take into consideration.  If you are looking to change jobs, do you already have a new job lined up?  If you do not, you will want to at least make sure that there is a good chance that you can seek employment elsewhere.  In most cases, you are unable to collect unemployment payments if you leave your job on your own terms.  If you have a family to support or if you rely on your income to pay important bills, like your rent or mortgage payments, you may want to have a backup plan in place.

In keeping with the current job outlook, you are advised to examine all job openings in your area.  What you will want to do is examine any required training, work experience, or education. Unfortunately, many individuals realize too late that they are unqualified for their dream job.  This is something that you do not want to do.  Instead of assuming, you can easily examine the average job requirements by examining all available job openings in your local newspaper or online.  If you do not have the necessary training, you may want to consider enrolling in a career training course, as they may be able to improve your chances of finding a new job.

The above mentioned factors are just a few of the many factors that you will want to take into consideration, should you be interested in changing jobs.  Of course, the decision to seek employment elsewhere is your decision to make, but, with something this important, you are advised to proceed with caution.

Why Keep a Postitive Attitude

You surely have heard about “positive thinking”, but why bother? Is there any reason you should make the effort to retain only positive thoughts? This article shares some ideas why you may in fact want to make this effort.

Higher Productivity

Maintaining a positive attitude may lead to higher productivity, whether in your career or personal life. When you are negative, you tend to give up more easily, get frustrated, get easily distracted, and drag your feet. A simple thing such as how you think can make a world of difference. W. Clement Stone spoke of this when he said “There is little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. The little difference is attitude.The big difference is whether it is positive or negative.”. Whether you want higher productivity is up to you, however consider the cause and effect of your attitude. Zig Ziglar also spoke of this when he said “Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will.”.

Better Relationships

Who wants to be around a negative person? Do you? When you are negative, you are sending out signals to others to stay away from you, unless perhaps they are also negative and seek a similar mindset. Do you want to attract negative people, or positive people? Ken Keyes Jr. touched on the reality of this when he said “A loving person lives in a loving world. A hostile person lives in a hostile world; everyone you meet is your mirror.” Your attitude affects both personal relationships, and career relationships. While the impact of your attitude in a personal relationship is perhaps more obvious, in the workplace it’s often less obvious. It’s the relationships, trust, and rapport you build with others which contribute greatly to advancement opportunities, and should not be overlooked.

Better Health

Both modern medical providers and ancient practitioners have said that your attitude can affect your health. Your body takes queues from your mind, and negative thoughts can be disruptive to your internal body processes. Handling stress is a key challenge for us, to avoid stress-induced illnesses. The reverse is also true that having good health will contribute towards a positive attitude, so take care of your body! A holistic approach is to focus on your mind and body together, ensuring you are eating well and getting exercise.


Happiness is perhaps one of the most important things of all, what good are the other things above if you aren’t happy? Financial success doesn’t necessarily equate to happiness, many wealthy people are quite unhappy. Happiness is really a state of mind, and we have complete control of our own minds. Unfortunately, many leave their thoughts and emotions on “autopilot”, never deciding for themselves how they want to think. Maintaining a positive attitude equates to a decision to be happy, it’s your choice! Buddha summarized how to remain happy no matter how bad things may seem when he said “Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn’t learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn’t learn a little, at least we didn’t get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn’t die; so, let us all be thankful.”. It’s also important to not miss the things that truly make us happy, which is not typically money, but often little things we take for granted. As Robert Brault said, “Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.”.

Spiritual Growth

If you believe in a creator, or practice a religious belief, then you may also believe that remaining positive is part of a spiritual growth path. Many religions teach this basic premise, that we should remain positive and trust in our creator no matter how bad things may seem. Even if you don’t have spiritual beliefs, perhaps you feel something within your conscience that urges you to be positive, and thus have a positive impact on others in your life. Being positive makes others feel good, which is rewarding in itself.

You Are Your Thoughts

What are you but your thoughts? Mahatma Gandhi said “A man is but the product of his thoughts what he thinks, he becomes.” What do you want to be? Your thoughts have more impact than you realize, and define who you are, how others react to you, what comes into your life, and how you will be remembered when you are no longer here. What type of person do you want to be? Make sure your thoughts and attitudes support your definition of yourself!

How to Do It

How to maintain a positive attitude is a subject for a different article as there are many methods to achieve it. However, deciding you WANT to do this is a key first step, and can lead you towards pursuing methods which work for you. A good second step is to begin to simply recognize when you are not feeling positive, and pause to reflect on whether you want to CHOOSE to feel that way or not. Getting your mind out of autopilot puts you back into control, which is fundamental to changing your attitude.

Be Happy Now

Are you still waiting for your circumstances to change before you’ll allow yourself to be happy?  Most of us have preconceived ideas of what would make us happy, and we refuse to be satisfied until those things happen.

The problem is that even once specific things happen in our lives, we’re rarely satisfied with them!  Instead, we shift our focus to something even bigger and better, believing “it” will make us happy (or happier).  We never allow ourselves to reach a point of contentment.  Have you done the same thing to yourself?

The good news is that you can decide to be happy NOW – even if not everything in your life is perfect.  Below you’ll find 3 easy ways to do so:

1)    Be grateful.  Gratitude is one of the most powerful states of mind that you can adopt.  Not only does it make you feel good, it shifts your focus from what you don’t have to what you DO have, and keeps it there!  As you focus more on what you are grateful to have in your life (even the really small blessings!), you worry less about anything that may be lacking.  The result?  A more pervasive sense of happiness!

2)    Take time to smell the roses.  If you spend most of your days feeling rushed and scattered, it’s hard to feel happy and content.  In order to be truly happy, you need to make time for yourself to relax, dream, and take pleasure in life’s simpler moments.  Beginning today, make sure to spend time doing things you love on a regular basis.  Read books that stimulate your imagination; listen to great music; take long walks, and generally make an effort to enjoy your life as it is right now.

3)    Love the journey.  Many of us make the mistake of pinning all of our expectations on some vague, far-off result, like the completion of goals.  We believe that once we “get there” everything will be perfect and we’ll finally be happy.  However, there is much to be gained from enjoying the journey TO your destination!  Make it your mission to revel in every moment that you’re working toward higher goals.  Enjoy the sense of self-mastery and accomplishment you gain with every goal you achieve.  Make it a worthwhile journey and you’ll savor the end result that much more!

Acts of Kindness Benefit Everyone

Do you really want to be happy? Everyone says yes, but the gateway to happiness makes some of us frown. The gateway to happiness, is giving to others. Think about this: “If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.” – The Dalai Lama

Some of us may feel that, if we give too much, our generosity, will be taken advantage of by others. This is true, and a few very selfish individuals can possibly perceive your good intentions as weakness.

However, people who seek to take advantage are in the minority. To quote Gandhi, “We must be the change, we wish to see in the world.” Think about it, change has to start somewhere, so why not start with you and me, right now?

You can donate anything randomly, without seeking reward, and anonymously, without telling anyone. This is good for you, the universe, and those who receive your acts of kindness. Every time you give, you will receive – even, if you are not looking for a reward.

Try it, and you will see, what some call, “karma,” the law of cause and effect. It works like this: For every action there is a reaction. Let’s make sure the reactions to our actions are good ones.

Danny Thomas said, “All of us are born for a reason, but all of us don’t discover why. Success in life has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It’s what you do for others.”

Share everything and you will achieve a legacy of kindness. Share nothing and people will, do their best, to forget you. When my life is over I will only leave memories, in the minds of others, and I want them all to be good ones.

So, how much should you give? It can start with, “heart felt”, kind words, a note, a card, or a flower. You will find that your gifts or donations won’t make you poor. As a result of this, you will see most people, naturally, return kindness to you.

You should also take the time to be polite to all of the people who perform services for you, every day. Many people do not bother to say hello to the maid, janitor, parking attendant, or service clerk.

Once you do, you may even learn their name, and you would be surprised how many of them will go out of their way to give you good service, just by addressing them by their first name.

If you establish sincerity and trust where ever you go, you will be loved by your fellow man. It is really that simple. As Mohammed said, “A person’s true wealth is the good he or she does in the world.”

3 Different Ideas to Goals

Many of you have heard of the SMART or SMARTER goals.  These are wonderful acronym phrases for you know what a goal should be.  I enjoy these acronyms and think that they are wonderful, but I will take just a few moments and explain 3 simple helps with goals. (If you want the longer version to this article then click here J the added portions will be in another color.)

First, the goal you set has to be something you really desire and I mean really desire.   When you set goals you tell others so that they can help you.  This helps you decide if the goal is something you really desire or not.

Deciding what you want to achieve can be really hard at times!  As you think about goals and what you want there are always people to help you and help you get started.  You just have to want it bad enough to share so you can have help and correction.  If you are not willing to have others correct or encourage you then what you want is not worth it to you.  Simply change to a different goal.

Second is this goal has to be woven into your life!  Written down, talked about, and worked on.  Goals that are set do no good when you don’t do something every day for it!

I have found that when it comes to weaving goals in my life it is best, have it written down and to have statements about the goal everywhere, affirmation statements if you will.  For example, if my goal is to exercise every day I will not only have that written down someplace where I can see but I will post post-it notes everywhere saying things like “Exercise makes me feel good about myself”  “Exercise makes me a healthier person” or “I love exercising.” These are simple statements but you see them enough and work towards them you will have a new desire to exercise.

Third part is there should always be room for adjustment.  Just because you set a goal and want it doesn’t mean that it is set in stone.  Make sure you can correct if the path is not the right one.  Fight for your goal but don’t be unreasonable!

I have set many goals that I have been told were unreasonable or out of reach.  I decided when making those goals that there was more to this goal than just reaching the end.  As I worked and worked and worked I found that I was not going to be able to reach some of these goals.  But as I thought about it I found that the goal made me reach higher than I ever would have had I not set them.  I am not saying go out and set goals that are all unachievable. When you want to have an adventure into someplace new or unfamiliar then set a goal and go for it.  This will be the only way you can get enough knowledge about it to set better goals the next time around.

Goals are amazing and they really do make people grow and build better relationships with others as we all work together to become better and reach new heights!  Good luck with the New Year and goals that you have set!
